Biography Merv Hicks played for St Helens and Great Britain as a prop before joining Canterbury in 1966.

Whilst at St Helens he was picked for both Great Britain under 24s (captain), and Great Britain.

Merv was selected to captain the Wales team for the 1975 World Cup, however broke his arm just a week before leaving for Australia. He was also captain of the Wales Youth Rugby Union team before he was enticed north to play rugby league with Doncaster first, then Warrington, then Saints.

Afer making his first grade debut against Easts (Roosters) in the fourth match of the season, he maintained a position in first grade over the next five seasons.
