Biography Clive Gartner joined Canterbury in 1956 as a five-eight.

The brother of Jim and Keith Gartner, nephew of Joe Gartner, cousin of Ray Gartner and the son-in-law of the great Frank Sponberg, Clive progressed to become a regular member of the reserve grade team in his initial season.

He received the opportunity to play first grade when John Kell was injured.

In 1957, Clive continued in reserve grade but had moved to play in the centres. After another season in reserve grade in 1958, Clive was able to secure a regular first grade position in 1959.

In 1960, Clive returned to reserve grade but was on hand to play in the semi-final against Easts (Roosters) when Dick Pickett was injured.
