Biography Jim Gartner joined Canterbury in 1946 as a centre.

Jim is the nephew of Joe Gartner, brother of Clive and Keith Gartner and the cousin of Ray Gartner. Jim is also the father of Australian representative, Russell Gartner.

Jim Gartner was a regular in the 1947 third grade team and played in the final against Easts (Roosters). After only playing a few games in 1948, Jim became a regular in the reserve grade team in 1949, playing fullback and centre.

In 1950, Jim returned to third grade as captain and mainly playing five-eight.
